Best Time to Visit Kashmir: A Season-by-Season Guide

By The Brag Route9 min read

People call Kashmir "paradise on earth," and the valley earns the name in every season. Spring brings carpets of tulips, summer brings green meadows, autumn turns the chinar trees gold, and winter covers everything in snow. So the best time to visit Kashmir depends on what you want from your trip.

This guide walks through each season: the weather, what to see, what to expect, and who each season suits best.

The quick answer

If you want pleasant weather and the widest choice of sightseeing, visit between April and June. For autumn colours and fewer crowds, go in September to November. For snow, skiing and a winter-wonderland trip, plan for December to February.

Kashmir really has no bad season. Each one just offers a different experience.

Spring (March to May): Blossoms and Tulips

Spring is when the valley wakes up after the long winter. Snow melts off the lower slopes, fruit trees flower, and the air feels fresh and mild.

Weather: Daytime temperatures in Srinagar climb from around 10–15°C in March to a comfortable 20–25°C by May. Nights stay cool, so pack a light jacket.

What makes it special

  • Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Srinagar. One of the largest tulip gardens in Asia, with over a million blooms in rows of red, yellow, pink and purple against the Zabarwan hills. It usually opens in late March and blooms through April. Check the opening dates before you book, because they shift each year with the weather.
  • Almond blossoms at Badamwari. The historic almond orchard below Hari Parbat fort flowers in pale pink and white, usually in March.
  • Gulmarg and Sonmarg in transition. Early spring can still leave snow on higher ground, so you can often see blossoms in the valley and snow at the hill stations on the same trip.
  • Shikara rides on Dal Lake are at their most pleasant, when it is neither cold nor hot.

Best for: Couples, families, photographers and first-time visitors.

Keep in mind: From April onward, hotels fill up fast, especially around the tulip season. Book early.

Summer (June to August): Meadows, Treks and Cool Escapes

While the Indian plains bake in the heat, Kashmir stays cool and green, which makes summer the peak tourist season.

Weather: Srinagar sees daytime highs of about 25–32°C. Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg stay noticeably cooler. Evenings in the hills can still be chilly.

What makes it special

  • Green meadows everywhere. Gulmarg's golf course and flower meadows, Pahalgam's Betaab and Aru valleys, and the Thajiwas Glacier near Sonmarg are all at their lushest.
  • Trekking season. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek, one of India's most beautiful high-altitude treks, opens roughly from July to September. Tarsar Marsar and other alpine routes also open up.
  • Road trips to offbeat valleys. Summer is the best time to reach places like Gurez, Warwan and Doodhpathri, where snow blocks access for much of the year.
  • Amarnath Yatra. The annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine usually runs from July to August. It brings large numbers of pilgrims, especially around Pahalgam and Sonmarg (Baltal), so expect heavier traffic and security on those routes.

Best for: Families escaping the heat, trekkers, adventure travellers and road-trippers.

Keep in mind: This is the busiest and most expensive time of year, particularly during Indian school holidays in May and June. The Kashmir Valley doesn't get the heavy monsoon that most of India does, but July and August bring occasional showers, and landslides can sometimes disrupt the Jammu–Srinagar highway.

Autumn (September to November): Golden Chinars and Harvest Season

Many seasoned travellers quietly call autumn Kashmir's best-kept secret. The crowds thin out, the skies turn crisp and clear, and the valley glows in shades of red, orange and gold.

Weather: September is still pleasant, around 20–28°C during the day. By November, days cool to 10–15°C and nights can drop close to freezing.

What makes it special

  • Chinar trees turning colour. The great chinar trees of Srinagar, especially around Naseem Bagh, Nishat Bagh and the Kashmir University campus, turn fiery red and gold from late October into November. It's a photographer's dream.
  • Apple harvest. September and October are apple-picking season in orchards across the valley, particularly around Sopore and Shopian. Many orchards along the roads welcome visitors.
  • Saffron harvest in Pampore. From late October to early November, the saffron fields near Srinagar bloom purple, a sight few visitors get to see.
  • Better value. With fewer tourists around, you'll often find better hotel rates and a calmer, more personal experience.

Best for: Photographers, couples, slow travellers and anyone who prefers quieter trips.

Keep in mind: Some high-altitude treks and remote roads start closing by late October or November as the first snow arrives. Pack warm layers for the evenings.

Winter (December to February): Snow, Skiing and Kahwa

Winter turns Kashmir into a snow-covered landscape straight out of a postcard. It's cold, sometimes very cold, but for many travellers that is the whole point.

Weather: Srinagar's daytime temperatures hover between 0–8°C, and nights often fall well below freezing. Gulmarg and Sonmarg get much colder. The harshest 40 days of winter, known locally as Chillai Kalan, run from 21 December to 31 January.

What makes it special

  • Skiing in Gulmarg. Gulmarg is one of Asia's best-known ski destinations, with powder snow, ski schools for beginners, and slopes for experienced skiers.
  • The Gulmarg Gondola. One of the highest cable cars in the world, it takes you up towards Apharwat Peak for sweeping views of snowy ranges.
  • Snow-covered Srinagar. Houseboats on Dal Lake with snow on the rooftops, and the lake's edges sometimes freezing over, make for unforgettable scenes.
  • Winter culture. Wrap yourself in a woollen pheran, sit by a kangri (traditional fire pot), sip hot kahwa, and try harissa, a slow-cooked mutton dish served on winter mornings.

Best for: Snow lovers, skiers, honeymooners and travellers wanting a winter-wonderland holiday.

Keep in mind: Heavy snowfall can close roads, including the Mughal Road and the routes to Sonmarg and other higher areas, and can sometimes delay flights. Keep your itinerary flexible, book heated accommodation, and bring proper thermals, waterproof boots and gloves.

Practical tips before you go

  • Book early for peak season. Hotels, houseboats and flights fill up quickly from April to June.
  • Pack layers, whatever the season. Mountain weather changes fast, and evenings are cool even in summer. Our winter packing guide covers the cold months in detail.
  • Check road conditions. Snow in winter and rain in summer can affect highways and mountain passes.
  • Sort out your mobile connection. Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir usually don't work there, so carry a postpaid connection or buy a local SIM.
  • Check current travel advisories from official sources shortly before your trip.
  • Respect local culture. Dress modestly, especially at religious sites, and always ask before photographing people.

Final thoughts

There's no single "perfect" time to visit Kashmir, only the right time for the trip you're dreaming of. Come in spring for tulip fields, in summer for green meadows and treks, in autumn for golden chinars and harvest season, or in winter for fresh powder snow. Whenever you go, Kashmir's beauty and its people's warm hospitality will make you want to come back.
