Snowboarding in Gulmarg

Gulmarg sits at around 2,650 m in the Pir Panjal range, a two to three hour drive from Srinagar, and is the practical base for snowboarding in Kashmir. Learning happens on the lower slopes; higher terrain depends on conditions and lift operation.

Snowboarding is planned separately from skiing on purpose. The equipment is different, the first two days feel different, and the progression from falling to linking turns follows its own curve. We plan around your stance, your boots and your level, not a generic snow activity.

Each one can be shortened, extended or combined with sightseeing days. Snowboarding usually needs one more day than skiing to reach the same comfort level, which these durations allow for.

Ability levels we plan for

Tell us on the enquiry form if your group has mixed levels, and a family with two first-timers and one intermediate rider is planned as exactly that.

Mixed-ability groups usually need instructors and slopes split by level for part of the day. We will say so in the quote rather than discover it on the mountain.

Advanced terrain, off-piste and backcountry riding is treated as an enquiry and assessed individually. We are not offering it as a guaranteed inclusion, and we will not confirm it until qualified guides, safety requirements and conditions allow.

First-timer

Has never skied or snowboarded before.

Beginner

Can use basic equipment and may be learning balance, stopping and simple turns.

Intermediate

Can link turns independently and wants to improve technique, confidence and terrain control.

Advanced

Experienced rider or skier seeking challenging terrain, subject to conditions, qualifications and local safety requirements.

All-level group

A group containing participants of different ability levels. Instructor allocation and slope planning may need to be separated by level.

Not sure

You would like the instructor or trip coordinator to recommend a suitable level.

A typical riding day

Times shift with weather, light and how the group is progressing. This is the shape of a day, not a timetable you are held to.

  1. Morning Breakfast at the hotel, then board collection, boot fitting and stance setup on the first day.
  2. Mid-morning Meet your instructor at the slope. Warm-up, then the first teaching block.
  3. Midday Break for lunch and to dry off. First-timers on a board tire quickly, so this break matters more than it sounds.
  4. Afternoon Second, usually shorter block. Supervised practice on the movement you were given in the morning.
  5. Late afternoon Equipment returned or stored. Light fades early, so slope time usually ends before it gets cold and flat.
  6. Evening Free. Nothing scheduled unless you have asked for a sightseeing add-on.

Rest days and sightseeing days can be dropped into any trip. After three consecutive days on a board, most people want one.

Not sure which to pick? Choose Help me choose on the enquiry form and we will quote two categories side by side.

Board and boot rental

Board, bindings, boots and a helmet are arranged locally for your riding days. Board length depends on your height and weight, and bindings are set to your stance, so we need details per person before you arrive.

  • Height, weight, shoe size and age per participant
  • Regular or goofy stance if you know it, otherwise set at fitting
  • Helmet requirement noted per person
  • Wrist guards and impact shorts are worth considering for first-timers
  • Damage or loss is charged by the supplier, not by us

Clothing and gear

Rental covers hardware, not clothing. Snowboarding means more time sitting and kneeling in snow than skiing does, so waterproofing matters even more.

  • Genuinely waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Thermal base layers and warm socks
  • Waterproof gloves or mittens, not woollen ones
  • Goggles and high-factor sun protection
  • Warm hat and neck cover for lift rides

Transport

Airport transfers and the Srinagar to Gulmarg leg are included as standard. In heavy snow the road can be slow, restricted or closed.

  • Srinagar airport pickup and drop
  • Srinagar to Gulmarg return transfer
  • Private or shared vehicle, as quoted
  • Vehicle category set by group size and luggage

Fitness and health

Snowboarding is physical and involves falling, particularly in the first two days. You do not need to be an athlete, but be honest about fitness and anything that affects it.

  • Core and leg strength make the first days easier
  • Tell us about wrist, shoulder, knee, heart or breathing conditions
  • Medical disclosure handled privately, not on the public form
  • Travel and medical insurance covering winter sports strongly recommended

Price, payment and cancellation

Snowboard trip prices depend on your dates and season band, the number of adults and children, rooms and occupancy, hotel category, instruction days, private or group lessons, equipment needs, transport category, lift charges and any add-ons. Because those vary this much, we quote rather than publish a single figure.

Starting price

Quoted per person on double-occupancy accommodation unless you tell us otherwise, inclusive of applicable taxes at the rate applying on your booking date. Final price depends on travel dates, hotel category, number of travellers, lesson type, equipment requirements and availability.

Booking amount

For group departures, ₹5,000 per person confirms the reservation. For custom and private trips the booking amount is stated in your quote. Either way we ask for it only after availability is verified and you have accepted the itinerary.

Balance payment

For group departures the balance is due 15 days before the departure date. For custom trips the date is written in your quote. You will receive a reminder rather than a surprise. Accepted modes are bank transfer and UPI.

Cancellation

15 days or more before departure, the ₹5,000 booking amount is non-refundable and any balance paid is refunded. 7 to 14 days, 50% of the trip cost is charged. Under 7 days or a no-show, no refund. Requests must be in writing.

Fitness, safety and conditions

  • Snowboarding carries an inherent risk of injury, wrists and shoulders most commonly, even with instruction.
  • Follow your instructor's slope and terrain decisions at all times.
  • Helmets are strongly recommended for every rider, at every level. Wrist guards are worth it for first-timers.
  • Advanced, off-piste and backcountry riding is not offered as a confirmed inclusion.
  • Gondola and chairlift operation is weather-dependent and decided locally.
  • Road access between Srinagar and Gulmarg can change at short notice.
  • Travel and medical insurance covering winter sports is strongly recommended.
  • Participants under 18 need consent and supervision arrangements agreed in advance.

Please do not send medical details through the public enquiry form. If you go ahead after the quote, we send a private booking form for anything that affects your safety on snow.

Frequently asked questions

Is snowboarding harder to learn than skiing?

The first two days are usually harder and involve more falling, and then it tends to progress faster. That is why our first-timer snowboard package allows three lesson days rather than two.

What is regular or goofy stance?

It is simply which foot you ride at the front: left foot forward is regular, right foot forward is goofy. If you do not know, the instructor works it out at fitting and the bindings are set accordingly. You do not need to decide before you arrive.

Can skiers and snowboarders travel together?

Yes. Instruction is split by discipline and level, and everything else about the trip stays shared. Select a mixed group on the enquiry form and set a discipline and level per person.

Is the gondola included?

Not by default. Lift operation and pricing are decided locally and change through the season, so we exclude it rather than promise it. It can be added on the day if running, and we will tell you the cost when you ask.

What if there is no snow in our dates?

We cannot guarantee snowfall in any month. Where instruction or a route is not possible, we offer a practical alternative if one exists. Any refund position follows the written cancellation and force majeure terms.

Do you provide winter clothing?

Rental normally covers board, bindings, boots and a helmet. Clothing rental is sometimes available locally and can be requested as an add-on, but bring your own waterproof layers if you can.

How do I pay, and when?

After we verify availability we send a written quote. If you accept it, we send a secure payment link for the booking amount, with the balance due before travel. We do not take full payment before availability is confirmed, and we do not store card details.

Can I combine snowboarding with sightseeing?

Yes. Most trips of five nights or more include at least one non-snow day, and after three days on a board most people want one. Tell us on the form and we will build it in.

Ready to check your dates?

The Ski & Snowboard Enquiry asks for your dates, group and level. Stance and boot sizes are collected only after you have received and accepted a quote.
