A gentle beginner slope in Gulmarg after fresh snow

Skiing in Gulmarg

Gulmarg sits at around 2,650 m in the Pir Panjal range, a two to three hour drive from Srinagar, and is the practical base for skiing in Kashmir. Lessons run on the lower slopes; higher terrain depends on conditions and lift operation.

We build ski trips around the ability level of each person travelling, not around a single group standard. Skiing and snowboarding are planned separately, because the equipment, the learning curve and the daily schedule are not the same.

Ability levels we plan for

Tell us on the enquiry form if your group has mixed levels, and a family with two first-timers and one intermediate skier is planned as exactly that.

Mixed-ability groups usually need instructors and slopes split by level for part of the day. We will say so in the quote rather than discover it on the mountain.

Advanced terrain, off-piste and backcountry riding is treated as an enquiry and assessed individually. We are not offering it as a guaranteed inclusion, and we will not confirm it until qualified guides, safety requirements and conditions allow.

First-timer

Has never skied or snowboarded before.

Beginner

Can use basic equipment and may be learning balance, stopping and simple turns.

Intermediate

Can link turns independently and wants to improve technique, confidence and terrain control.

Advanced

Experienced rider or skier seeking challenging terrain, subject to conditions, qualifications and local safety requirements.

All-level group

A group containing participants of different ability levels. Instructor allocation and slope planning may need to be separated by level.

Not sure

You would like the instructor or trip coordinator to recommend a suitable level.

A typical instruction day

Times shift with weather, light and how the group is progressing. This is the shape of a day, not a timetable you are held to.

  1. Morning Breakfast at the hotel, then equipment collection and boot fitting on the first day.
  2. Mid-morning Meet your instructor at the slope. Warm-up and the first teaching block.
  3. Midday Break for lunch and to dry off. Useful reset for first-timers, who tire faster than they expect.
  4. Afternoon Second block, either continued instruction or supervised practice on what you learned.
  5. Late afternoon Equipment returned or stored. Light fades early, so slope time usually ends before it gets cold and flat.
  6. Evening Free. Nothing scheduled unless you have asked for a sightseeing add-on.

Rest days and sightseeing days can be dropped into any trip. Most people taking four or more instruction days want at least one.

Not sure which to pick? Choose Help me choose on the enquiry form and we will quote two categories side by side.

Equipment rental

Skis, boots, poles and a helmet are arranged locally for your instruction days. To reserve the right sizes we need details per person before you arrive.

  • Height, weight, shoe size and age per participant
  • Helmet requirement noted per person
  • Sizes confirmed with the supplier before your dates
  • Damage or loss is charged by the supplier, not by us

Clothing and gear

Rental usually covers hardware, not clothing. Coming without waterproof layers is the most common mistake on a first ski trip.

  • Waterproof, insulated jacket and trousers
  • Thermal base layers and warm socks
  • Waterproof gloves, not woollen ones
  • Goggles and high-factor sun protection
  • Warm hat and neck cover for lift rides

Transport

Airport transfers and the Srinagar to Gulmarg leg are included as standard. In heavy snow the road can be slow, restricted or closed.

  • Srinagar airport pickup and drop
  • Srinagar to Gulmarg return transfer
  • Private or shared vehicle, as quoted
  • Vehicle category set by group size and luggage

Fitness and health

Skiing is a physical activity at altitude. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be honest about fitness and any condition affecting it.

  • Moderate general fitness helps a lot
  • Tell us about joint, heart or breathing conditions
  • Medical disclosure handled privately, not on the public form
  • Travel and medical insurance strongly recommended

Price, payment and cancellation

Ski trip prices depend on your dates and season band, the number of adults and children, rooms and occupancy, hotel category, instruction days, private or group lessons, equipment needs, transport category, lift charges and any add-ons. Because those vary this much, we quote rather than publish a single figure.

Starting price

Quoted per person on double-occupancy accommodation unless you tell us otherwise, inclusive of applicable taxes at the rate applying on your booking date. Final price depends on travel dates, hotel category, number of travellers, lesson type, equipment requirements and availability.

Booking amount

For group departures, ₹5,000 per person confirms the reservation. For custom and private trips the booking amount is stated in your quote. Either way we ask for it only after availability is verified and you have accepted the itinerary.

Balance payment

For group departures the balance is due 15 days before the departure date. For custom trips the date is written in your quote. You will receive a reminder rather than a surprise. Accepted modes are bank transfer and UPI.

Cancellation

15 days or more before departure, the ₹5,000 booking amount is non-refundable and any balance paid is refunded. 7 to 14 days, 50% of the trip cost is charged. Under 7 days or a no-show, no refund. Requests must be in writing.

Fitness, safety and conditions

  • Skiing carries an inherent risk of injury, even with instruction.
  • Follow your instructor's slope and terrain decisions at all times.
  • Helmets are strongly recommended for every participant, at every level.
  • Advanced, off-piste and backcountry riding is not offered as a confirmed inclusion.
  • Gondola and chairlift operation is weather-dependent and decided locally.
  • Road access between Srinagar and Gulmarg can change at short notice.
  • Travel and medical insurance covering winter sports is strongly recommended.
  • Participants under 18 need consent and supervision arrangements agreed in advance.

Please do not send medical details through the public enquiry form. If you go ahead after the quote, we send a private booking form for anything that affects your safety on snow.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have skied before?

No. First-timer packages assume you have never been on skis. You will spend the first day on a gentle slope learning to stand, slide, stop and make a simple turn.

Can our group have different ability levels?

Yes, and it is common. You set a level per participant on the enquiry form. Where instruction needs to be split by level we will say so in the quote, along with what that does to the cost.

Is the gondola included?

Not by default. Lift operation and pricing are decided locally and change through the season, so we exclude it rather than promise it. It can be added on the day if running, and we will tell you the cost when you ask.

What if there is no snow in our dates?

We cannot guarantee snowfall in any month. Where instruction or a route is not possible, we offer a practical alternative if one exists. Any refund position follows the written cancellation and force majeure terms.

Do you provide winter clothing?

Rental normally covers skis, boots, poles and a helmet. Clothing rental is sometimes available locally and can be requested as an add-on, but bring your own waterproof layers if you can.

How do I pay, and when?

After we verify availability we send a written quote. If you accept it, we send a secure payment link for the booking amount, with the balance due before travel. We do not take full payment before availability is confirmed, and we do not store card details.

Can I combine skiing with sightseeing?

Yes. Most trips of five nights or more include at least one non-snow day. Tell us on the form and we will build it in rather than leave you to arrange it locally.

Ready to check your dates?

The Ski & Snowboard Enquiry asks for your dates, group and level. Equipment sizes are collected only after you have received and accepted a quote.
